Teaching Credits for Online Courses

 

Rationale

Teaching online courses brings significant financial benefit to the department.  At the same time, teaching an online course can demand a wider range of commitments than teaching a resident-instruction version of the same course.  This policy establishes guidelines for teaching compensation for online courses which will encourage faculty to develop and offer such courses and which will also meet the department’s need for expansion in this area.

All online course offerings must be approved by the Director of Online Instruction and by the Undergraduate Studies Committee.  This policy applies only to such approved offerings.

 

Course Development

Compensation for the development of new online courses is provided by the Department and the College of Science.  Contractually, this is compensation for the production of “learning objects” which are deposited in a College “repository”.  The number of learning objects produced per course will normally be 12 per credit hour, and compensation will be provided at the rate of $150 per learning object.  Specific expectations for the development work shall be established in an agreement between the Department and the developer(s), possibly with the collaboration of the College of Science Instructional Design Group.

The Director of Online Instruction will confirm that the course development work has been satisfactorily carried out in order to authorize payment.

 

Course Instruction

The lead instructor of an n-credit online course will receive (n+1) credits teaching compensation.  A teaching assistant in such a course (if appointed) will receive n credits compensation.   These figures assume that enrollment is sufficiently high to make it appropriate for the department to run the course (typically 16 minimum, or 35 minimum with a TA).  Sections with lower enrollment may be cancelled, or the extra credit compensation may be withdrawn.

As a guideline, TA or additional instructional support will normally be considered for any online section that exceeds an enrollment of 45 students, with additional such support provided for each additional 120 SCH (student credit hours) generated by the section in question.
