Catalog Description

CALCULUS WITH ANALYTIC GEOMETRY I (4 semester hours) Functions; limits; analytic geometry, derivative, differentials, applications; integrals, applications. Students may take only one course for credit from among Math 110, 140, 140A, and 140B.

Prerequisites

Math 22, 26; or Math 40 or Math 41; or a satisfactory performance on the algebra and trigonometry math proficiency exam.

Calculators

A graphics calculator is useful as a study and learning tool when used appropriately. Calculus is a collection of ideas which are not mastered through calculator skills. However, note that no calculators are allowed on the two midterm and final examinations.

Examinations

There are two midterm examinations given during the semester, and a final examination given during final examination week at the end of the semester.

Midterm Examination I: Monday, February 16, 6:30-7:45PM
Midterm Examination II: Tuesday, March 23, 6:30-7:45PM

If you have a conflict with either of the midterm examinations, an early conflict is given from 5:05-6:20PM on the date of the examination. In addition, a late make-up examination is offered several days later from 6:30-7:45PM. Exam I late makeup is Tuesday, February 24, 6:30-7:45PM and Exam II late makeup is Wednesday, March 31, 6:30-7:45PM.

Only students with official University conflicts, or a valid, documented excuse, such as illness, will be permitted to schedule conflict or late make-up examinations. Personal business such as travel, employment, weddings, graduations or attendance at public events such as concerts, sporting events, etc are not valid excuses. Students must get a sign up form from the instructor and bring it to 108 Whitmore to sign up for the make up exam.

Students are responsible for requesting permission from the instructor at least three days before the regularly scheduled examination, except in emergency circumstances, and for enrolling in these exams at the Calculus Office, 108 Whitmore Laboratory.

The date and time of the final examination will be announced by the University Registrar midway through the semester. The final examination may be scheduled at any time during the final exam period.  Do not plan to leave until after the last day of the final exam week, Friday, May 7, 2004.

Conflict Final Examinations

There are two types of conflict examinations, direct and overload. Direct conflicts are two examinations scheduled at the same time. Students with a direct conflict should file for a conflict examination. Overload examinations are three or more examinations scheduled within a fifteen hour period, from the beginning of the first examination to the beginning of the third examination. Students may elect to take the three or more examinations on the same day if they wish.

Students may file for direct and overload conflict examinations at the Registrar's Office between February 23 and March 5.

Late-Drop

Students may add/drop a course without academic penalty within the first ten calendar days of the semester. A student may late drop a course within the first twelve weeks of the semester but accrues late drop credits equal to the number of credits in the dropped course. A baccalaureate student is limited to 16 late drop credits. The late drop deadline for Fall Semester 2003 is Friday, April 9.

Grades

The grade for the course is based on a total of 450 points distributed as shown below and the A, B, C, D and F grade levels also are shown below. The plus and minus grades will be determined within the appropriate ranges.

This website is a good source for general information about undergraduate mathematics as well as information on evening exam schedules, office hours for instructors, sample exams, and so on.

Ethics

"Academic dishonesty includes, but is not limited to cheating, plagiarism, facilitating acts of academic dishonesty by others, unauthorized prior possession of examinations, submitting work of another person or work previously used without informing the instructor, or tampering with the academic work of other students. A student charged with academic dishonesty will be given oral or written notice by the instructor."

"If students believe they have been falsely accused, they should seek redress through informal discussions with the instructor, department head, dean or campus executive officer. If the instructor believes that the infraction is sufficiently serious to warrant the referral of the case to the Office of Conduct Standards or if the instructor will award a final grade of F in the course because of the infraction, the student and faculty will be afforded formal due process procedure."
