A note on the way questions are asked:
As you know, when asked to "solve" for x, you can plug the answers
into the problem to see if you get a true statement. To avoid
plugging in to find a correct choice on a multiple choice test (to
force you to actually solve the problem algebraically), we sometimes
ask you to "find the sum of the solutions" or "find the product of the
solutions" or simply "how many solutions". To test whether you
can complete the square, we could ask you to"find an equivalent
equation." This means start the process of solving by completing
the square and note what each step looks like. When you correctly
get to a particular step you should find that equation as one of the
choices. On word problems, instead of having you find a solution,
we could ask you to just set up a problem that would give the correct
solution. We tell you this now so that you are not caught
off-guard on the exam.
In addition to reviewing class notes, quizzes, homework, and practice
exams, students should do and understand all of the following textbook
problems.
