Homework 6 - due wednesday 7th october in class

Be aware that in chapter 3, the 8th edition and 9th edition question numbers differ. For that reason, I've written out the questions here.

A) Solve the IVP

y"-2y'+5y=0, y(pi/2) = 0, y'(pi/2) =2

This corresponds to section 3.3 qn. 19 in the 9th edition of textbook. Here pi means the number which is the area of a unit circle, ie. the number with a value which is 3.14 to 2 decimal places.
[8 marks]

B)

part i) Find general solution of 25y"-20y'+4y = 0    [6 marks]

part ii)  Solve the IVP and sketch the solution for  9y"-12y" +4y = 0, y(0) =2, y'(0)= -1   [8 marks]

In 9th edition, this is Section 3.4 questions 9. and 11

C) Find general solution for

 part i)   y"-2y'-3y = 3 exp(2t)

part ii)    y"-2y'+5y = 3 sin(2t)

[8 marks each, 16 marks total]

This corresponds to 9th edition, Section 3.5 questions 1. and 2. We'll learn how to do part C on friday.

+2 marks for presentation.
