HOW TO FIND OUT ABOUT HOMEWORK: I'll send a weekly homework email on
wednesdays, and also post the information on my website
www.math.psu.edu/thompson
OLD EDITIONS OF THE TEXTBOOK: From the point of view of the material covered, any
edition from 6 onwards will be fine for this course. From the point of
view of homework questions, we will have to be a little careful. I'll
be setting homework from the 9th edition, and it is your responsibility
to have access to a copy.
I have copies of both 8th and 9th editions, so I'll make sure that the
8th edition will be fine for homework. I'm hoping that 7th and
6th editions will be fine also. I'll be really clear about which
questions I want you to try, so that we can quickly flag up any
differences between the different editions. Be extra careful if you are
using a 6th or 7th edition.
On the weekly homework email, I'll write out the first few words of the
question I want you to try, so you can check you are trying the right
one.
MARKING: Each homework will be out of 40. Your best ten marks will
count towards your final grade... so you'll have a homework mark out of
400 by the end of the semester... We'll divide that by 4 and that will
be the number of points (out of 100) which you have earned towards your
final grade.
Teaching notices:
8/25/09 - A few people asked me about the suitability of old editions
of the textbook. From the point of view of the material covered,
any edition from 6 onwards will be fine. From the point of view of
homework questions, we will have to be a little careful. I'll be
setting homework from the 9th edition, and it is your responsibility to
have access to a copy. That said, I'll try and stick to questions that
appeared in earlier editions. I'll also try and be really clear about
which questions I want you to try, so that we can quickly flag up any
differences between the different editions. First homework will be set
on Wednesday.
8/26/09 Office hours are Monday 12.20-13.10 and Tuesday 13.25-14.15. My office is 230 McAllister.
