CHINESE SOFTWARE ON THE SUNS

Those who read and write Chinese may be interested to know that there
is a fairly useful suite of Chinese document preparation software
installed on the Math Department Sparcstation network. Most recently,
I have upgraded this software to allow the inclusion of traditional
(Taiwan or Hong Kong style) Chinese character text in TeX documents.

Rather than go into details here, let me give some hints so that users
can explore the available software at their own pace.

The easiest way to find out what Chinese software is available is
"apropos Chinese". The output from this command is currently as
follows:

c2ps (1) - convert Chinese files to PostScript for printing
cemacs (1) - Chinese version of the GNU Emacs text editor
cless (1) - Chinese-capable version of less
cvi (1) - Chinese version of the vi text editor
cxterm (1) - Chinese X Window terminal emulator
gb2big, big2gb (1)	- GB <--> BIG-5 Chinese character conversion
pmc (1) - Poor Man's Chinese TeX

More information about each of the above software packages can be
obtained by reading the appropriate man page. For instance, "man pmc"
will explain how to include Chinese characters in TeX documents.

All of the above software is compatible with IBM PC based Chinese
software such as CCDOS, BYX, and ETEN.

Some of the above software displays Chinese characters on the Sun
workstation screen. To use this software, you need a modern windowing
system such as Open Windows or X Windows. Many people are still using
old-fashioned windowing systems such as SunView. If you are currently
using SunView and would like to switch to Open Windows, please send
mail to root, or have a look at ~simpson/doc/openwin/openwin.help.

If you have any questions about Chinese software on the Suns, please
ask me, either in person or by e-mail. I want this software to be
easy to use and trouble free.
