Watch this space for updated information throughout the semester (such as midterm room locations and other news and information).

January 14, 2005:
The following is one example of a graph plotter that can be found on the Internet:

January 20, 2005:
The University Learning Center will once again sponsor Supplemental Instruction (SI) for MATH 110.  The SI leader for this semester is Nathan Jones.  Nathan is a veteran MATH 110 SI leader.  His email address is nej105@psu.edu if you would like further information about the MATH 110 SI program.  Also, here are the rooms and times that have been set up for Nathan's SI sessions this semester:

NOTE:  This information has now changed!  Please see the note below dated March 14, 2005.

January 24, 2005:
As we begin to discuss the idea of secant lines approaching a tangent line in the limit, the following Java demo may prove helpful:

February 7, 2005:  For those who have a conflict with one of the midterm exam dates and times (e.g., you have another class at the same time), our department offers two other opportunities to take each midterm.

  1. On the same night as each midterm, we offer a conflict exam.  This is the same exam that is taken during the regular exam period, but it is offered 5:05 - 6:20pm.  You must sign up for the conflict exam at least 48 hours prior to its date in order to take this exam.  The location for sign ups is 108 Whitmore Laboratory.
  2. For those who cannot take either the regular midterm or the conflict midterm mentioned above, we offer a makeup exam opportunity as well.  The date of Makeup Midterm 1 is Tuesday, March 1, 2005.   The makeup exams are given 6:30 - 7:45pm.  You must sign up for each makeup exam at least 48 hours prior to its date in order to take this exam. The location for sign ups is 108 Whitmore Laboratory.  Note that such a makeup exam opportunity is not allowed without a valid and verifiable excuse for not taking the regular midterm exam.

February 7, 2005:  Note that the first midterm will cover all the material from Chapters 2 and 3 with the exception of the material in Section 3.4 (Marginal Functions in Economics) and Section 3.7 (Differentials).  The midterm will contain 20 multiple-choice questions each worth 5 points.

You must come prepared for the midterm with a pencil (you will turn in your answers on Scan Tron forms) and a photo identification card.  Strict penalties may be imposed for failure to produce a photo identification card at the exam.  Note that the use of calculators, books, notes, etc. is not allowed on the exam.  Also, you will be required to stow away all portable electronic devices (phones, PDAs, etc.) during the exam.

The room locations for the exam are given by section at the following website:

http://www.math.psu.edu/ug/Spring2005/eveningexams.htm

Be sure to read this information very carefully.  If you are not sure of the section in which you are enrolled, you may obtain your schedule at eLion.

February 16, 2005:  This is the last week that you can file for conflict exams for your finals. The deadline is Sunday, February 20, 2005. No requests for a conflict exam will be accepted after February 20. Students file for the conflict exams on eLion.  Note that the Mathematics Department does not deal with final exam conflicts; these must all be processed through eLion and the Registrar's office.

For any further questions please refer to the registrar's web page at the following URL:

February 21, 2005:  Dr. Sellers' office hour for Wednesday, February 23, will be held as follows:

2:00-3:00pm, 322 Sackett

This will hopefully allow for maximum use of his office hour that day (in preparation for the exam that evening).

March 14, 2005:  The dates, times, and locations for the MATH 110 Supplemental Instruction with Nathan Jones have changed.  They are now as follows:

Sundays, 7:00-8:00, in 202 Osmond
Mondays, 6:00-7:00 in 107 Wartick
Thursdays, 2:30-3:20 in 106 Osmond

March 21, 2005:  Please see the note above regarding conflict and makeup exams (it is dated February 7, 2005).  The procedure for signing up for a makeup for Exam II is the same as that outlined in the February 7 note.

March 21, 2005:  Be sure to check your room assignment for Exam II.  It is quite possible that it is different from your room location for Exam I.  You can find the room assignments at

http://www.math.psu.edu/ug/Spring2005/eveningexams.htm

Be sure to look up your room assignment for the second exam, not the first.

March 22, 2005:  Dr. Sellers' office hour for Monday, March 28, will be held as follows:

2:00-3:00pm, 011 Ferguson

This will hopefully allow for maximum use of his office hour that day (in preparation for the exam that evening).

April 7, 2005:  Given our recent discussion on population growth models and exponential functions, I thought it might be interesting to note the following survey about which I was notified yesterday via email.  The link to the survey is:

http://www.numbersusa.com/polls?ID=1

I am not claiming you should take part in the survey!  My only goal is to show one example of a way in which population growth models play a role in a variety of other areas.

April 15, 2005:  There are several helpful tools on the Internet for studying approximations to area.  One that I think is quite nice can be found at the following:

http://www.slu.edu/classes/maymk/Riemann/Riemann.html

April 20, 2005:  Below please find our final exam schedule broken out by sections.  You can use this to double-check your room location for the final exam.  (Note that the names in the right-most column are the recitation instructor last names.)
