Using Applix to keep a gradebook

To run Applix, type the command applix at the prompt. A window will appear allowing you to choose which office program you want (word processor, spreadsheet, etc):

To get a spreadsheet, click on the third button, with the small boxes in a grid. A blank spreadsheet will open:

Example spreadsheet

I have an example spreadsheet showing one way you could keep your grades using Applix. The student names have been changed to keep the grade data anonymous. To view the spreadsheet, save it to a file then open it with Applix.

Importing a roster into Applix

It's easy to import your class roster file into Applix. Start with a blank spreadsheet. Choose "Import" from the file menu. you will be presented with a dialog box:

At the top of this dialog box, you select the name of the file where you saved your class roster (this is the roster that Elion sent you by email). At the bottom of this dialog, you should select "ASCII Wizard." Press "Open."

In the images on this page, student information has been grayed out.

You will need to go through three more dialog boxes to import your file. The first dialog box allows you to remove the header lines from your file. Change the number beside "Data starts at row:" until the first student on your roster appears in row 1. Then click "Finished."

The next dialog allows you to break the pieces of each line into different columns. Change the "Delimiters" to commas only, and change the "Text Qualifier" to a double quote. Then press "Finished."

You don't need to press anything on the next dialog except "Finished." After you click that button, the roster will be imported into your spreadsheet.
