Math 251H: Honors Ordinary and Partial Differential Equations

MIDTERM 2 TOPICS

  1. Second-order linear equations: Complex and repeated roots of the characteristic equations: reduction of order, inhomogeneous equations: methods of undetermined coefficients and variation of parameters, michanical vibrations, forced oscillations and resonances.

  2. Laplace Transform: definition and main properties, solutions of initial value problems for second-order ODEs, ODEs with discontinuous forcing, inpulse functions, convolution integrals.

  3. Systems of first-order ODEs: reduction of higher-order ODEs to system of first-order equations, systems of linear algebraic equations: eigenvalues and igenvectors, homogeneous systems of first-order, constant-coefficient ODEs: phase portraits (the case of distinct, real eigenvalues).
