Scanning preliminaries
These steps apply regardless of the scanning task.
- If the scanner is turned off, press the power button and let the scanner warm up for about a minute. The power button is located on the front-left corner of the front panel.
- Login on bochner (a Mac G5) with your Mathnet username and password.
- Place the document face-up in the automatic feed tray or face down
on the scanning surface.
- Run the Epson scanning software on bochner: Applications | Epson Scan. An icon will appear in the icon bar.
- Select color, gray scale or black and white scanning. (grayscale or color recommended for hand-written text)
- You may select paper size, orientation, document source and resolution from the on screen display.
- Most importantly, be sure to select the source for the document. (ADF-Single or Dual Sided or "Document Table" for the glass of the scanner. When you're ready, click "Scan". Next, you'll be asked how and where to save your file. This includes the file name, location, and format in which to save your document.
Scanning a multipage document into a PDF file:
- Once you've launched the Epson Scan application, click on the "Document Source" pulldown and select Single or Double Sided from ADF.
- Select the color and resolution settings of your choice.
- Select "Scan".
- From the proceeding window, select "PDF" from the Type pull-down as the filetype.
- Choose a file name and a directory to save your scan by using the "other" radio button at the top. Click "OK".
- To make changes to a PDF, you may open the file in Adobe 7.0 Standard on Bochner.
Scanning an image:
To scan a single image, follow the procedure above, but in the "File Save Settings" dialog, instead of choosing "PDF" as the format, choose "JPG" or another image format. Depending on the media, you may need to select "Document Table" from the Document Source pull-down and use the glass to scan instead of the ADF.
Acceptable media for the Automatic Document Feeder (ADF)
The ADF works best when the originals meet the following specifications:
- standard media of A4, U.S. letter and legal sized paper
- nonstandard media ranging in size from 88.9 by 127 mm to 216 by 356 mm
- media weights from 60 to 90 grams per square meter
- media that is square-shaped or rectangualar and in good condition
- media that is free of perforations or punch holes
- media that is free of wet glue, correction fluid, or ink
Avoid putting multipart forms, transparencies, magazine pages, gum-backed pages, and light-weight paper in the ADF.
Notes:
These are just quick start instructions. There are a lot of options and the interested user is encouraged to explore them. If you have any questions or run into problems, send email to help.
While the ADF if not unnecessarily rough on documents, it does bend them around rollers. If your originals are
precious or fragile, you should not put them through the ADF.
