| Abstract: | We show that stable homotopy classes of asymptotic morphisms from A to B, where A and B are C*-algebras, form an abelian group E(A,B), and that the corresponding bivariant functor is the universal half-exact fucntor whose abstract existence was shown by the second author. The theory thus obtained is an improvement and simplification of the bivariant theory KK(A,B) of Kasparov. |
