PSU Mathematics Department Graduate Program
Eberly College of Science Mathematics Department

Ph.D. Program Overview

We offer the following degrees: Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.), Doctor of Education (D.Ed.), Master of Arts (M.A.), and Master of Education (M.Ed.). The department offers support to almost exclusively doctoral students. Applications received by January 1 receive full consideration.

It is not necessary for an applicant to the Ph.D. program to have a master's degree before applying.

We make extremely competitive offers to top applicants. Most offers are individually tailored, and the conditions are discussed with applicants before offers are sent. There are special programs to support qualified domestic applicants.

We begin reviewing applications in January and take into account many things such as Subject GRE score, Personal Statement, Letters of Support, courses taken (with syllabi and grades), participation in special programs, undergraduate research, prizes, etc.

In most cases, we schedule a visit to Penn State (for domestic applicants) or a telephone interview (for international applicants) before making an offer. Since this is a long process, some applicants maybe contacted as late as March. Entering Ph.D. students are expected to have the necessary prerequisites for at least two of the basic, first-year courses. They are also expected to demonstrate clear thinking and potential for becoming prominent researchers as well as excellent mathematics teachers.

Here you can find Admission Requirements, information on Financial Aid, and step-by-step How to Apply instructions. Please take your time to visit Mathematics at Penn State and other departmental pages for our research, activities, and programs.

If you have any questions, please email to gradstudies@math.psu.edu. We will be happy to help you. May we suggest though that you check FAQs first.
