Ph.D. Program Overview
We offer the following degrees: Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.), Doctor of Education (D.Ed.), Master of Arts (M.A.), and Master of Education (M.Ed.). The department offers support to almost exclusively doctoral students. Applications received by January 15th receive full consideration.
It is not necessary for an applicant to the Ph.D. program to have a master's degree before applying.
We make extremely competitive offers to top applicants.
We begin reviewing applications in January and take into account many things such as Subject GRE score, Personal Statement, Letters of Support, courses taken (with syllabi and grades), participation in special programs, undergraduate research, prizes, etc.
Entering Ph.D. students are expected to have the necessary prerequisites for the basic, first-year courses. They are also expected to demonstrate clear thinking and potential for becoming prominent researchers as well as excellent mathematics teachers.
Here you can find Admission Requirements, information on Financial Aid, and step-by-step How to Apply instructions. Please take your time to visit Mathematics at Penn State and other departmental pages for our research, activities, and programs.
