Items Needed

I-9, W-4, and Alien Tax Forms

International students must report to the International Students and Scholars Office (ISS), 222 Boucke Building, to complete their I-9 and W-4 forms. These forms need to be completed and approved before any paychecks can be issued. You must present your passport to complete these forms. Bring a copy of your I-9 to 224 McAllister. You must also complete several tax forms:

  1. Alien Information Request Form and, if eligible,
  2. Exemption from Withholding on Compensation for Independent Personal Services of a Nonresident Alien Individual; Form 8233, and
  3. Revenue Procedure 87-8.

To be eligible, your country must have a tax treaty with the United States. Click here for instructions for completing the 8233. If you have any questions in regard to these forms, please contact the Payroll Office or call at 865-7621. Note: These forms will need to be completed each November/December in order to qualify for exempt status for the following calendar year.

Other students must see Becky to complete their I-9 and W-4 forms. Bring the appropriate ID needed as listed on I-9.

University Intellectual Property Agreement

All students receiving financial support must sign a University Intellectual Property Agreement.

Salary Checks--Direct Deposit

All Penn State employees have their salary check directly deposited into a bank account on the last working day of the month. You must have a US checking or savings account for this to be done. You will receive a pay stub at the end of each month indicating the amount that has been deposited. In order to activate the direct deposit, you must complete a Salary Deposit Request Form and attach a voided check (a blank, unsigned check, with checking account number on it, and VOID written on it) or include savings account number on the form.

Computer Accounts

All graduate students are required to obtain a computer account with the departmental computing group. Various informational messages are sent via email during the academic year. We have three computer labs—116 Osmond Laboratory, 301 Whitmore Laboratory and 230 McAllister Building. An account has already been created for you. Please see Becky for your account information.

Worker's Compensation Employee Notification

The University has established a panel of six physicians for employees to use for the first ninety days for medical treatment, if needed, as a result of a work related injury or illness. Please complete the Worker's Compensation Employee Notification form and return it to Becky.
