Directions to Penn State

Penn State's University Park Campus is located in State College, Pennsylvania, situated near the center of Pennsylvania, about 12 miles off Interstate 80 on PA Route 26. Air service to the University Park Airport is provided by US Air Express, United Express, and NorthWest Airlink, together offering about twenty-five flights daily. By auto, State College is approximately 220 highway miles from Washington, D.C.; 180 miles from Baltimore; 200 miles from Philadelphia; 140 miles from Pittsburgh; and 240 miles from New York City.


Driving

From New York City, the suggested route is via the George Washington Bridge to Interstate 80. In Pennsylvania, exit from I-80 at Exit 24 (Bellefonte) and follow Route 26 south to State College.

From Philadelphia, take the Schuylkill Expressway to the Pennsylvania Turnpike. Use Exit 19 (Harrisburg East), follow I-283 to I-83 and proceed north on I-83 to the I-81 interchange. Then follow I-81 west to Route 322/22 West Exit. Proceed west on Route 322 through Lewistown to State College.

From Pittsburgh, follow Route 22 (I-376) to Duncansville on Route 220, bypassing downtown Altoona and Tyrone, through Port Matilda and then Route 322 east to State College. A scenic route follows Route 22 beyond Duncansville to Water Street, Route 45 to Pine Grove Mills and Route 26 to State College. This second route is not recommended in snowy weather.

From Washington, D.C., several routes are available:

  1. Take Route 270 to Frederick, Route 70 to Breezewood, Route 30 to Everett, and Route 26 to State College, or
  2. Take Route 270 to Frederick, Route 15 past Gettysburg, through Camp Hill to Route 322 west to State College through Lewistown, or
  3. Take I-95 or the Baltimore-Washington Parkway to Baltimore, west loop I-695 to I-83 north. Continue on I-83 north to the I-81 interchange. Then follow I-81 west to Route 322/22 Exit. Proceed west on Route 322 through Lewistown to State College.

From the West, take I-80 to Exit 20 (Woodland) just east of Clearfield, then Route 322 east to State College. One may also exit I-80 at Exit 24 (Bellefonte) and follow Route 26 south to State College.


Flying

From the University Park (State College) Airport, US Air Express flies to Pittsburgh and Philadelphia; United Express flies to Washington Dulles; and Northwest Airlink flies to Detroit. The University Park Airport is located five miles from campus. For flight information call:

Private or chartered aircraft may fly into University Park Airport. Call (814) 355-5511 to make arrangements. 90 miles to the southeast of State College, Harrisburg International Airport offers an alternative arrival and departure location, with several hundred flights weekly.


By Bus

Trailways and Greyhound Lines connections are available to and from State College. There are also frequent Greyhound busses between New York City and Milesburg, PA, which is about 20 minutes from Penn State.
