Abstract: This is a joint work with Gang Tian. The partition functions of topological sigma models coupled with gravity
can be viewed as a generating function for Gromov-Witten invariants of
projective varieties (or more generally, compact symplectic manifolds).
Such functions enjoy many beautiful properties. In the simplest case where the
underlying manifold is a point, it was conjectured by Witten and proved
by Kontsevich (also partially by Witten) that this function is a tau function
of th KdV hierarchy. A natural generalization of Witten's conjecture to all
Fano manifolds is the so called Virasoro conjecture proposed by
Eguchi-Hori-Xiong and Katz. This conjecture predicts that such partition
functions are annihilated by infinitely many differential operators
which form half branch of a Virasoro algebra. We prove that the genus-0
part of this conjecture, i.e. the part which corresponds to quantum cohomology,
is true for all projective varieties (or more generally compact symplectic
manifolds).
