Vacuum formation in compressible flow

We consider the problem of whether there exist solutions to the compressible Navier-Stokes equations that display formation of a vacuum (i.e. an open region in space where the density vanishes identically), when no vacuum is present in the initial data. We will review some of the modeling issues involved, comment on recent numerical results, and relate this to what has rigorously been proved.
