Frieze and wallpaper groups provide mathematical insights on 2D periodic patterns, while automatic classification of symmetry groups from real-world images is a non-trivial computational task. I will describe our effort in machine perception of periodic patterns for computer vision and computer graphics applications. I will also describe our effort in the formalization and computation of "skewed symmetry groups".
