Mathematical Modeling of Drosophila Morphogenesis: Dorsal Closure
Stephanos Venakides - Duke University

In the early stages of morphogenesis of the drosophila embryo the dorsal (back) side of the embryo is covered by the amnioserosa, a sheet having the shape of the human eye, consisting of a single layer of polygonal cells. As morphogenesis proceeds, the opening closes, its shape remaining approximately self-similar. We attempt to model the phenomena and the forces that result in closure utilizing direct imaging as well as the results of laser ablation experiments.
