Introduction to rare events

Weiqing Ren, Courant Institute, NYU

Many problems in applied sciences can be abstractly formulated as a system navigating over a complex energy landscape. The disparity of time scales present in the dynamics arises from the disparity of typical energy barriers of the system and the thermal energy. The hopping process between metastable states is a rare event. In this talk, I will explain the problem, the difficulties in numerical modeling, and also present some examples.
