|Title:||What is a shock wave?|
|Seminar:||Slow Pitch Seminar|
|We will consider some of the historical development that lead to a mathematical model for shock waves in fluids. The issue of wave propagation and shock formation received much attention in the mid-1800s, with further clarifications and results obtained during the Second World War. We will review the (slow) development and clarification that resulted from work by several outstanding mathematicians and physicist, among them Riemann, Stokes, Bethe, and von Neumann.|
