|I will give a view of Hamiltonian mechanics based on the ideas from optics. The field at the interface of mechanics, optics, variational principles and PDEs is extremely rich, with most areas of mathematics playing key roles: calculus of variations, topology, symplectic geometry, analysis, optimal control, partial differential equations. The richness of the subject is manifested by the fact that, although the subject goes back to Fermat, a striking new discovery was made just a couple of decades ago by Gromov. I will describe Gromov's result in terms which require no technical background. This description will be preceded by a simple optical interpretation of the Hamiltonian formulation of mechanics.|
