| Title: | How the golf ball got its spots. (Joint Seminar with SIAM Student Chapter) |
|---|---|
| Seminar: | CCMA Luncheon Seminar |
| Speaker: | Douglas N.Arnold, McKnight Presidential Professor of Mathematics, University of Minnesota |
| Abstract: | |
| During the 19th century it was discovered that a golf ball with a rough surface could be driven further than a smooth one. Since then thousands of dimple patterns have been proposed in an attempt to exploit this. Still no one knows how to find the optimal design. In this talk (which requires no technical prerequisites) I will look at some of the fascinating mathematics, physics, and computation which this search entails. | |
