| Title: | Dequantization and Tropical Mathematics |
| Seminar: | Algebra and Number Theory Seminar |
| Speaker: | Grigory L. Litvinov, Independent University of Moscow |
| Abstract: |
| Tropical mathematics can be treated as a result of a dequantization of the traditional mathematics over numerical fields as the Planck constant tends to zero taking pure imaginary values. Tropical mathematics is a part of the idempotent mathematics (calculus) in the sense of V.P. Maslov and his collaborators. The basic paradigm is expressed in terms of an idempotent correspondence principle. This principle is similar to N. Bohr's correspondence principles in Quantum Physics (and closely related to it). A systematic application of the idempotent correspondence principle leads to a variety of results, often quite unexpected (e.g., the Legendre transform is a tropical version of the Fourier transform). As a result, in parallel with the traditional mathematics, its "classical shadow" appears. |
