| I will present a number of elementary formulated and highly intriguing
problems that can be summarized as follows: which groups admit nontrivial
bi-invariant metrics (or, equivalently, conjugation-invariant norms) on them?
This question makes sense in a variety of contexts, from finitely generated
groups to groups of diffeomorphisms. In the latter case, the question boils
down to the study of a particular "complexity" norm of a diffeomorphism. |
