Title:Defect Eigenvalues and Diophantine approximation.

Abstract:
We consider the problem of a periodic Schrodinger eigenvalue problem on the line with a dislocation type defect. We prove an index theorem bounding the number of eigenvalues in a particular gap in terms of the number of connected components of the intersection of resolvent sets. This count also admits an interpretation as a Maslov index. In the semiclassical (large energy) limit the number of eigenvalues depends on the solvability of a certain Diophantine approximation problem.
