|Title:||A Small Open Problem on a Permutation Generating Function on Multisets|
|Speaker:||Kagan Kursungoz, Penn State|
|On the second week of seminars, the speaker presented a joint work with Ae Ja Yee, but time did not allow to state a small open problem, which has since been solved by Richard Moy from UIUC.
A permutation generating function identity on multisets where permutations are weighted in a prescribed way had been proposed by the speaker and Yee without a proof, based on empirical evidence from Mathematica. The original generating function appeared in the context of a bijective proof of the q-Gauss summation and involved multisets of two elements, and q-binomial coefficients. Moy's solution not only explains the original identity combinatorially, it also generalizes the function to arbitrary multisets using q-multinomial coefficients.|
