| Title: | Gradient Blowup for Compressible Euler and Nonlinear Wave Equations |
| Seminar: | Computational and Applied Mathematics Colloquium |
| Speaker: | Geng Chen, Department of Mathematics, Penn State |
| Abstract: |
| We consider smooth solutions and their gradient blowup for 1D compressible
Euler system and 1D nonlinear wave equations.
We provide quantitative measures of compression and rarefaction in smooth
solutions. By studying how these develop along characteristics we obtain
a Ricatti-type system which provides blowup results for the Euler system.
These results generalize P.Lax' gradient blowup results from 1964.
We also discuss applications in gas dynamics, transverse MHD and nonlinear
elastic equations.
