| Let X -> Y be a finite covering of compact Riemann surfaces. It is well known that if X is the Riemann sphere then Y is also the Riemann sphere. (An algebraic version of this result is called a theorem of Luroth.)
It turns out that for a given g>1 a natural generalization of Luroth's theorem holds true only for ``almost all" X of genus g . We discuss explicit examples (and counterexamples). |
