| Title: | Inferring evolution from DNA |
| Seminar: | Department of Mathematics Colloquium |
| Speaker: | Joshua Plotkin, University of Pennsylvania |
| Abstract: |
| he question of what forces maintain genetic variability within a population has been studied for over a century. In this talk, I will review basic concepts and mathematical models used in the field of population genetics. I will focus on the problem of inferring the rate of mutation and the strength of natural selection from sampled DNA sequences. Current approaches to this problem suffer from limitations that arise from the "infinite sites" assumption. By relaxing this assumption, I introduce new methods that improve our ability to make accurate inferences about mutation rates and selection pressures. Joint work with Michael Desai. |
