Title:Proving theorems using physical arguments
Seminar:Slow Pitch Seminar
Speaker:Mark Levi, Penn State University
Abstract:
Usually one uses mathematics to analyze physical problems. In this contrarian approach I will reverse the roles, giving a proof of two theorems using physics: the Gauss-Bonnet from differential geometry and the Riemann Mapping Theorem from complex variables. If any time remains, I will also sketch a proof of Moser's theorem on density, in the same spirit.
