| We present a new proof of a result of Bombieri concerning the estimation of Weyl sums in which the leading coefficient has rational approximations of a certain shape involving relatively large denominators. The new argument provides some additional flexibility that yields small improvements in the existing Weyl exponents and in the number of variables required to establish the asymptotic formula in Waring's problem. |
