| Title: | Hydrodynamic Instabilities around Simple A+B->C Chemical Fronts |
| Seminar: | The Pritchard Lab Seminar |
| Speaker: | Anne De Wit, Center for Nonlinear Phenomena, Université Libre de Bruxelles - Belgium |
| Abstract: |
| Density or viscosity changes across a simple A+B->C chemical front can lead to hydrodynamic flows that deform the concentration fields in space and time.
In the first part of the talk, I will review the buoyancy-driven flows that can be observed around such a front when the chemical reaction triggers density changes in a covered horizontal solution layer. I will show theoretically for this case
that the dynamics in the presence of convection can be predicted solely on the basis of the 1D reaction-diffusion density profile across the front. In the second part of the talk, I will discuss chemically-driven viscous fingering instabilities of A+B->C fronts occuring when a solution of reactant A displaces a solution of another reactant B of same viscosity, producing a more viscous product C at the interface. |
