| Title: | Half the primes have an odd number of 1's in their binary expansion |
| Seminar: | Algebra and Number Theory Seminar |
| Speaker: | Hugh Montgomery, University of Michigan |
| Abstract: |
| In 1968, the famous transcendental number theorist A. O. Gelfond a number of problems of the following sort: Let s_b(n) denote the sum of the digits in the base b expansion of n. Then how is s_b(p) distributed modulo m, as p runs over primes?
This problem was brilliantly solved by Christian Mauduit and Jo\"el Rivat in 2007.
The object of the talk is to explain their method, with the introduction of new ideas and commentary that ease the work. |
