|Consider a wild fire that is spreading in the plane, at a rate possibly depending on the point x , and on the direction of the front.
We assume that the spreading of the contamination can be controlled by constructing "barriers", in real time.
For example, think of spraying with water or fire extingusher a thin strip of land, which the fire then cannot cross.
Having set up a precise mathematical model, two main questions arise:
1) How fast should the barrier be constructed, in order to block the fire ?
2) Can we find an optimal strategy, minimizing the total value of the burned region ?
A general theorem on the existence of optimal strategies will be presented, together with various necessary conditions for optimality.
Various related questions and open problems will be discussed.|
