| Title: | Elementary proofs of various facts about 3-cores |
| Seminar: | Combinatorics/Partitions Seminar |
| Speaker: | Dr. James Sellers, Department of Mathematics, The Pennsylvania State University |
| Abstract: |
| A t-core of the positive integer n is a partition of n in which none of the hook numbers are divisible by t. Various people have studied t-core partitions over the last few decades thanks, in part, to their connections to representation theory. I will begin the talk by sharing some of the history of arithmetic results related to t-cores for several values of t. I will then spend the remaining time discussing very recent work with Mike Hirschhorn (University of New South Wales) in which we proved various properties of 3-cores via truly elementary techniques. |
