Title: | Two Combinatorial Problems in Ring Theory |

Seminar: | Algebra and Number Theory Seminar |

Speaker: | Ed Formanek, Penn State University |

Abstract: |

I will give the history of two open problems in ring theory which may be related.
The Nagata-Higman Problem. What is the least integer d(n) such that {x_1 \cdots x_{d(n)} is a linear combination of n-th powers in Q, the free associative algebra (without unit) in countably many variables?
What is the least integer c(n) such that M_n(Q) has a non-vanishing central polynomial of degree c(n)? |
