Title:Isogeometric analysis: a new paradigm for PDE solvers.
Seminar:CCMA Luncheon Seminar
Speaker:Annalisa Buffa, Istituto di Matematica Applicate e Tecnologie Informatiche (IMATI), Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerce (CNR), Pavia, Italy
In this talk, I will introduce the concept of Isogeometric Analysis and the discretization of PDEs by means of NURBS (Non-Uniform-Rational-B-Splines). I will give a brief introduction about NURBS, and I will show the potentials of these new techniques which are characterized by exact representation of the geometry, and by the use of regular basis functions. For example, having regular discrete functions allow for the use of stream functions in elasticity or for the computation of discrete electromagnetic fields which are continuous across the interelement boundary. The aim of the current research is the mathematical understanding of these techniques and many open questions will be asked along the talk.
