Title:Who needs a mathematician when one has a powerful computer?
Seminar:CCMA Luncheon Seminar
Speaker:Edriss Titi, UC Irvine and Weizmann Institute
Abstract:
Nearly all direct numerical simulations which are performed toward studying the question of global regularity of the Navier-Stokes and Euler equations of incompressible fluids are conducted in period domains. In this short talk I will present a family of equations whose solutions remain regular for all times when they are considered in periodic domains. At the same time, I will show that certain solutions of the same equations become singular (blow up) in finite time when they are considered in bounded domains subject to homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions.
