Title:Multiscale Modeling of Materials (M3): From Nano to Bio

Multiscale simulation techniques have widely been used to uncover the underlying atomistic mechanisms without the limitations to the system size and time scales inherent to the fully atomistic models. The presentation begins with an overview of the existing multiscale schemes for space-filling crystals, one-atom thick monolayers (i.e., carbon nanotubes), and biological materials (i.e., DNA and lipids). Applications of these schemes to specific mechanics problems, including CNT fracture and endocytosis, will demonstrate the computational efficiency as well as physical accuracy of these schemes as compared to the fully atomistic counterparts. The presentation conveys the message that mechanics plays a critical role in developing fundamental understanding of deformation mechanisms of nanostructured materials and biological processes.
