| Consider a transformation of a space with a geometric structure.
A "geometric invariant" of such a transformation is a number which
does not depend on choice of coordinates, that is, invariant under
the conjugations by automorphisms of the structure. The theory of
Dynamical Systems studies lots of such invariants; usually they
are "asymptotic invariants" defined via iterations. Thus they are
badly behaved under composition of transformations. We will be
concerned with invariants that are subadditive under composition.
We will see that they are very rare and the algebraic structure of
the group of automorphisms could by itself rule out the existence
of such invariants. This approach will lead us to a number of
algebraic, geometric and topological problems. The talk is based
on a joint work with S. Ivanov and L. Polterovich. |
