|Title:||C*-algebras and the Mackey analogy, 2|
|Seminar:||Noncommutative Geometry Seminar|
|Speaker:||John Skukalek, Penn State|
|Back in the 70's, George Mackey published an article in which he pointed out similarities between the irreducible representation theories of semisimple Lie groups and associated semidirect product groups of the type mentioned in the first talk. He was unable to formulate a precise conjecture based on his observations, but Nigel Higson has demonstrated that C*-algebras provide a good framework in which to explore Mackey's "analogy." Conversely, the Mackey analogy seems to suggest a more representation-theoretic approach to the (already proven) Baum-Connes conjecture for Lie groups. This talk will focus on connected complex semisimple Lie groups (e.g. SL(2,C)) and, time permitting, discuss extensions of these results to almost connected versions of such groups.|
