| This talk will explore the role of C*-algebras in harmonic analysis and representation theory of topological groups. First taking a look at the situation for abelian and compact groups, we'll arrive at a simple C*-algebraic generalization to the case of a semidirect product arising from a compact group acting on an abelian group. Upon doing so, we'll have rediscovered a basic theorem in representation theory due to George Mackey. |
