|Toric varieties constitute a natural relatively ``easy" class of algebraic varieties that contains affine spaces, projective spaces and their products. The theory of toric varieties has several important applications, including compactifications of locally symmetric spaces, critical points of analytic functions, resolutions of singularities, geometry of convex polytopes, etc.
I plan to provide an elementary introduction to the subject based on a beautiful paper of Volodya Danilov entitled ``The Geometry of Toric Varieties", Russian Math. Surveys 33 (1978), no. 2, 97--154.
