| Title: | Effective Quantum Reduction |
| Seminar: | GAP Seminar |
| Speaker: | Martin Bojowald, Penn State Gravity |
| Abstract: |
| Symplectic reduction is used when a classical dynamical system is subject to constraints which imply gauge symmetries. The analog for a quantum system is Dirac quantization, requiring states in a Hilbert space to be annihilated by constraint operators. We will discuss how these concepts can be related by viewing Dirac quantization as symplectic reduction of the infinite-dimensional space of states, subject to infinitely many constraints. Truncations to finite-dimensional subspaces (which are
non-symplectic Poisson manifolds) provide a ladder of effective descriptions briding the gap between the classical and the quantum system. |
