Title: The Weinstein conjecture in Higher dimensions Symplectic Topology Seminar Vivek Srikrishnan (PSU) In 1993 Hofer proved that if a contact form $\lambda$ induces an overtwisted contact structure on a 3-manifold $M$, then $(M,\lambda)$ satisfies the Weinstein conjecture, i.e., the Reeb field of $\lambda$ has contractible periodic orbit. Nidermayer has proposed a generalization of an overtwisted disk to higher dimensions, called a Plastikstufe. We discuss a result of Hofer and Albers demonstrating that if a contact manifold $(M,\lambda)$ supports a Plastikstufe, then the Reeb vector field of $\lambda$ admits a contractible periodic orbit.
