| Title: | A characterization of entropies for mult-dimensional symbolic systems |
| Seminar: | Center for Dynamics and Geometry Seminar |
| Speaker: | Mike Hochman, Princeton |
| Abstract: |
| I will discuss recent results on the topological entropy of multidimensional shifts of finite type (aka. hard core models, topological markov chains, tiling systems...). In the one-dimensional case one can compute the entropy effectively and characterize algebraically the numbers that can arise this way. No such results have been known for the multidimensional case. I will describe a recent characterization (joint with Tom Meyerovitch) of the numbers which can occur as entropies in higher dimensions. The characterization is, surprisingly, recursive-theoretic. If time permits I will also discuss a more complicated recursive characterization of the subdynamics which can occur in these systems and other applications.
The talk will not require any prior knowledge of recursion theory. |
