|Starting from billiard systems with few degrees of freedom,
it is possible to create interesting classes of Markov chains by
making some of the system's dynamical variables random.
The resulting stochastic processes serve as concrete models with which
to investigate basic issues in statistical mechanics such as approach to
thermal equilibrium and the relationship between diffusivity and
structural features of the system. Other topics related to
irreversibility and stochastic thermodynamics will be
mentioned briefly and illustrated by computer experiments.|
