|Title:||K-theory and Fredholm operators, I|
|Seminar:||Noncommutative Geometry Seminar|
|Speaker:||Nigel Higson, Penn State|
|The index of a continuous family of Fredholm operators may be constructed as an element in the topological K-theory of the parameter space. I'll review the construction, which goes back to the early days of index theory, and then discuss noncommutative generalizations involving Banach algebras and Frechet algebras, following the work of Kasparov and Lafforgue. Finally I'll discuss a relationship between topological K-theory and pairs of adjoint functors between categories of modules.|
