| Title: | Weyl's asymptotic law |
| Seminar: | Slow Pitch Seminar |
| Speaker: | Nigel Higson |
| Abstract: |
| Weyl's law describes the asymptotic behavior of eigenvalues
associated to the Dirichlet problem in a bounded planar domain. It
answered a conjecture of the physicist H.A. Lorentz that was thought to
be well beyond mathematical reach, and its proof was an early triumph of
Hilbert space theory. Later on, Weyl's law came to be viewed as a
foundational result in spectral geometry, index theory and noncommutative
geometry. I shall describe the law and sketch Weyl's proof. |
