| Couette flows are shear flows with a linear velocity profile between two
plates. It is one of the simplest but important laminar flows. We will discuss two unresolved issues about them. First, Couette flows are known to be linearly stable for any Reynolds number, but become turbulent for large Reynolds numbers by both experimental and numerical results. We will discuss several attemps to explain the nature of transient turbulence near Couette. Second, starting from the work of Orr in 1907, the velocity of the linearized inviscid equation at Couette flows is known to decay in time. But the nonlinear inviscid damping is still open. The mechanism of such inviscid damping is important to understand the appearance of coherent structures in 2D turbulence. |
